Courtney and John: Autism and Mood Disorder

Courtney and John noticed their daughter Bella didn’t interact well with other children. She didn’t speak until she was three, so they thought her behavior problems such as biting, scratching, and hitting were because she was having a hard time communicating. Bella received some assistance in her early years, but at 9 years old a series of events led Courtney and John to check Bella into a psychiatric ward. Her stay there was life changing for all three of them. Bella received an Autism and mood disorder diagnosis. From there there were able to get the proper treatment, direction and a plan of action.

Sasha and Gary went to a prenatal doctors appointment where an ultrasound showed enlarged ventricles in their baby’s brain, as well as holes in her heart. An amniocentesis revealed their daughter, Zoey, would be born with Trisomy 21- also known a Down syndrome. Zoey is now 7 years old, and her life has inspired Sasha and Gary to adopt a little girl from China with Down syndrome.

Adrianne and Jason: Tetra-Amelia syndrome

Adrianne and Jason had two biological daughters when they adopted their son and then their third daughter Maria from the Philippines. Maria has Tetra Amelia syndrome, a meaning she was born with the absence of all four limbs. Adrianne and Jason had no experience with special needs children, so they had to search and find resources, ask questions, and prepare to adopt Maria. Maria has been home with her new family for almost a year and a half. She has overcome many limitations and shown her family that, despite her disability, she can be happy and enjoy life like anyone else.
